Many essential oils on the market today are diluted, adulterated or just synthetic fragrances. Provided 3-5% of an oil is put into a bottle, it can be labeled "100% pure, natural" etc. And here's the real rub, that 3-5% can be an artificial, man-made chemical that is so much like the real thing that it can be very difficult to tell it from the genuine article. The science of manufacturing these "oils" is very clever. These guys know a lot about marketing but not a lot about truthfulness in labeling

The use of Essential Oils as therapeutic agents is not new. A lot of knowledge is being re-discovered and added to as research goes on. A wholistic approach and preventative medicine is a sound way to care for and treat the body.
Aromatherapy is, "A therapy using only aromas." The name was coined
relatively recently by Dr. René Gattefosse who experienced first hand
the healing properties of essential oils after he was involved in a
laboratory accident. He was badly burned and Lavender oil eased the
pain and minimised the scarring that normally goes with burns.
Most people automatically associate the use of therapeutic grade
essential oils with Aromatherapy. Strictly speaking, this is not
correct. However, many of the oils we use and promote are beneficial
when inhaled so the term Aromatherapy can be used interchangeably.
What exactly is an essential oil ?
Definitions vary, but put simply, they are the aromatic, volatile substances found in plants. They can be extracted by various means from the leaves, roots, flowers, seed, bark and wood of plants, shrubs and trees. Essential oils give perfume to a rose or fragrance to a sprig of rosemary. Essential oils are not greasy as are lipid oils. In fact they are highly volatile and readily evaporate. They are the life blood of the plant, carrying the nutrients around the plant and are present in sacs as tiny droplets. Their very complex chemistry may contain hundreds of constituents, combined in infinite ways that perform many functions in the biochemistry of the plant. They are called "essential" because without them, the plant would die.
How are Essential Oils obtained ?
Most but not all plants produce essential oils but not all contain sufficient or suitable oils to justify extraction. And not all are safe for use.
Essential oils can be obtained by several means but the most popular is steam distillation. The raw material is placed in large vats and heat and pressure is applied. The steam is then condensed and the oil collected.
Oil can also be obtained from some material like citrus rind by expressing, that is simply by pressing. Then there are special ways to produce what are known as "absolutes" like jasmin and neroli for instance.
The extraction process is crucial to the end result. Distillation is a highly skilled process and the fragile oil can easily be damaged if too much heat or pressure is applied. The time is also critical, too long and the oil is ruined, too short and valuable constituents may not be available.
Many essential oil companies use high temperature and pressure and solvents in the extraction process. This produces a greater quantity of oil in a shorter time but oils produced like this cannot be guaranteed to have the same therapeutic value as do oils produced by companies who place a great deal of importance on correct distilling techniques.
The art of distillation is just that, an art, the quality of the oil is dependent on many factors.
Many companies cut and dilute their oils. Adulteration can alter the structure of the oil and can influence the effect on the body. Testing for purity is very difficult, even highly sophisticated analysis often cannot detect adulterated oil. Can you see how this could be wide open to abuse ?

When inhaled, essential oils can enter the nose and tiny hairs carry the aroma to the olfactory bulb, a special area of the brain designed to interpret smells.This can have direct physical affect on the body. How can Essential Oils be used ?
Essential oils can be applied directly to the skin, inhaled or ingested.

They can also be added to bath water, used in hot or cold compresses used in cooking, sprayed into the air to deodorise and freshen stale air, used in mouthwashes and gargles, used to discourage insects, used in drinks and in pot pourri.
It is very important to know that good quality essential oils should never be heated !
Oil candles and burners are not a good way to use oils. The molecular structure can be altered and the oils rendered not only useless but harmful. It is even more important never to heat artificial oils as they too, can exert an influence on the body and it can be unpredictable.

5. Do they use stainless steel distillers, not some inferior metal that could contaminate the end result ?
6. Does the company pay very special attention to the temperature and pressure applied during distilling ?
7. Are they certain that the therapeutic qualities have been preserved in the oils ?
8. Can they be certain that no solvents have been used,and that no adulteration has gone on ?
9. Do the oils conform to AFNOR and ISO standards ?
10. Are they tested for purity by an independent laboratory ?
11. Does the company understand the concept of living frequencies ?
12. Do the oils contain a measurable frequency? Are these levels available to you?
